Alumni & Development

What We Do

The Alumni & Friends of the Faculty of Law Association is committed to supporting the Faculty of Law, its alumni, and its current students. The association supports these groups in many ways.

Faculty

  • The Alumni & Friends of the Faculty of Law Association helps defray the costs associated with publishing the Faculty of Law’s alumni magazine, Without Prejudice. By contributing approximately half of the bi-annual magazine’s publication costs, the Alumni & Friends of the Faculty of Law Association enables the faculty to allocate additional funds from its operating budget to faculty enhancements and special projects.

  • In a continuous effort to raise the profile of the faculty, the association participates in public relations efforts, and coordinates a variety of events held at the faculty.

Alumni

  • The Alumni & Friends of the Faculty of Law Association is committed to helping alumni maintain a connection to the faculty by organizing various alumni gatherings. These events include the annual spring reception held in Edmonton, as well as individual receptions hosted by Alumni and Friends branches across Canada.

  • The Alumni & Friends of the Faculty of Law Association's Spring Reception has been held at the Edmonton Fairmont Hotel Macdonald for the last ten years. Aside from being the major fund-raiser for the association, the spring reception has grown to become a major social event within the Edmonton area legal community, attracting both alumni and non-alumni. The 2010 Spring Reception, held on June 16, was a great success thanks to increased support from our sponsors and strong attendance.

  • As one of its missions is to help alumni connect with each other, the association works to develop entertaining social programs that are attractive to alumni of all ages.

  • Class reunions are a great opportunity for alumni to renew old acquaintances, and the association is pleased to support these special events.

  • The association is very proud of its working relationship with the Canadian Bar Association Alberta, resulting in both organizations co-hosting an annual "Meet the Bench" reception, bringing articling students together with members of the judiciary.

Students

  • The association is very proud to fund the Alumni & Friends of the Faculty of Law Association Bursary, which generates approximately $2000 in funds annually in the form of 2 - $1000 bursaries. In addition, to mark the association's 10th anniversary, 10 bursaries of $1000 each were awarded. The bursaries are awarded to students in good standing based on financial need.

  • Each first-year student receives a welcome gift from the Alumni & Friends of the Faculty of Law Association.

  • The association coordinates a Welcome Call Program, giving first year students the opportunity to receive a personal phone call from an alumnus. By starting the networking process, this phone call is a great benefit to students as they can ask questions about the law school experience, career opportunities and other information.

  • The Faculty of Law’s socially conscious student body undertakes many charitable initiatives, including the famed Law Show. All proceeds from this student-led variety show production are donated to an Edmonton-based charity. The Alumni & Friends of the Faculty of Law Association is pleased to support this annual event.

  • To celebrate their graduation from the Faculty of Law, third-year students receive a composite class graduation photo courtesy of the Alumni & Friends of the Faculty of Law Association. These special student gifts serve as both a special keepsake of their time at the faculty, as well as an official welcome to the Alumni & Friends of the Faculty of Law Association.
