Law Campaign 2008
A Successful Launch
The Faculty of Law initially set its goal for Law Campaign 2008 at $10 million. Our Law Campaign 2008 team of co-chairs - Frank Layton, Doug Goss, Peggy Gouin, Randall Block, Barry Heck and Marcella Szel, worked diligently in 2005 to help build momentum for the campaign, which officially kicked off in September of that year with celebrations in both Edmonton and Calgary.
As we approached the kick off, we had funds committed or received of approximately $4 million. Just prior to the kick off events, we learned of the very generous leadership gift from Frank and Beverley MacInnis, allowing us to announce our progress at over $6.6 million. Since the kick-off events in September 2005, we have committed gifts totalling over $9 million.
Given our successes with Law Campaign 2008 thus far, we are in an enviable position to increase our original goal to a minimum of $12.5 million. By increasing our goal, we can work towards meeting remaining priorities.
The outstanding needs of the Faculty include:
- additional scholarship, bursary and program funding for students;
- technology upgrades in one large classroom and three smaller classrooms;
- additional funding for Chairs and Professorships;
- additional funding for the Law Excellence Endowment (providing discretionary funds to meet emerging needs) and support for Centres and Institutes.
Although we are recognized as one of the best law schools in the nation, we must continue to enhance our Faculty in order to remain competitive in today’s legal education environment. We will need over $12 million to accomplish this goal, and help maintain the Faculty of Law’s position as a top-tier law school in Canada.
