History of the HLI
The Health Law Institute has operated continuously since its creation in 1977 by Madam Justice Ellen Picard, now of the Court of Appeal of Alberta, then a Professor in the Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta. This makes the Institute one of the oldest educational and research centres of its kind in the world.
The Institute began as a resource centre. Over the past 10 years, it has developed into an international centre for health law providing public legal education and undertaking research on current issues.
Throughout its existence, the Institute has been generously funded by the Alberta Law Foundation and gratefully acknowledges this assistance, as well as the continued support of the Faculty of Law and the University of Alberta.
