Faculty Of Law
Health Law and Policy at the Faculty of Law has been recognized as an emerging area of excellence at this University. The Faculty is home to the Health Law Institute which, since its inception in 1977, has gained a national reputation for excellence in both research and teaching.
A Wide Range of Health Law Courses
LL.B. and LL.M. students may select from a wide range of classes offered within the Faculty of Law, including courses such as Law & Medicine, Health Care Ethics & the Law, Biotechnology Law, Privacy & Access to Information and Intellectual Property. In addition to the Health Law Institute, the University of Alberta is home to other institutes and faculties that provide excellent opportunities for interdisciplinary research and collaboration. These include the John Dossetor Health Ethics Centre, the Institute for Health Economics, the National Institute of Nanotechnology, the Centre for Health Promotion Studies, and the Faculty of Medicine & Dentisrty.
Numerous Conferences, Lectures & Seminars
Each year, the Health Law Institute sponsors major conferences, lectures and seminars. For instance, in 2002, the Institute hosted “Precedent & Innovation: Health Law in the 21st Century,” which was the first annual national health law conference in Canada. The Institute also organizes a series of health law seminars each year with invited lecturers from across Canada and abroad, including the Picard lectures in health law, intended to honour our founder, Madame Justice Ellen Picard.

Leading Publications
The Institute publishes the Health Law Review and the Health Law Journal. Students are welcome to consider submitting high-quality research papers for possible publication in the Review or Journal. Each year, the recipient of the Lieberman Prize for outstanding academic achievement in the Law & Medicine course may have her or his paper considered for publication in the Health Law Journal.

Nationally Recognized Faculty Members
Many Faculty members are nationally acclaimed experts in their field and have produced leading texts, chapters and academic articles. Students at the University of Alberta have numerous opportunties to learn directly from these professors and may even have the opportunity to assist or collaborate in their research.

Exciting Employment Opportunities
Each summer, the Institute hires several LL.B. students to work full- or part-time on a wide range of projects. Often, students have opportunities to attend, or even present at, conferences and workshops.
