J.D. Students

Introduction

The University of Alberta Faculty of Law provides many opportunities for students in the J.D. program to focus their studies in the area of health law and policy.

Course Selection

Students may select from a diverse range of classes offered within the Faculty of Law. For a list of the courses offered click here.

Students may also enroll in a directed research course to research and write on a health law topic of the student’s choice under the supervision of a Faculty member. As health law is an interdisciplinary field, students may choose to select among courses offered outside the Law Faculty that address health care policy, economics, history, philosophy and ethics, to a maximum of three credits.

Conferences, Lectures & Seminars

Each year, the Health Law Institute sponsors major conferences, lectures and seminars. These include the annual Picard lecture in health law and a series of health law seminars each year with invited lecturers from across Canada and abroad.. For more information on these events, click here. J.D. students with an interest in this area can enroll in the Contemporary Issues in Health Law - Seminar Series course. This course offers an opportunity for students to attend, critically enegage with the lectures on contemporary health law at the Health Law Seminar Series and respond in a series of written essays. For more information about this course, click here.

Publications

The Institute publishes the Health Law Review and the Health Law Journal. Students have the opportunity to submit high-quality research papers for possible publication in the Review or Journal. Additionally, each year, the recipient of the Lieberman Prize for outstanding academic achievement in the Law & Medicine course may have her or his paper considered for publication in the Health Law Journal.

Employment Opportunities

Each summer, the Institute hires several J.D. students to work full- or part-time on a wide range of projects. Applications for summer employment are typically due in January of every year. See application details here.

Students who work at the HLI may have the opporunity to attend or even present at conferences or workshops. There may also be opportunities for some students to continue working occasional hours for the Institute during the academic year.
