Visions National Health Law Conference
In 2007, the Health Law Institute hosted the very successful Visions National Health Law Conference in Banff, Alberta from November 8 - 10, 2007.
The conference was attended by approximately 120 academics, lawyers and health professionals from across the country. The conference opened with the Picard Lecture which was a panel discussion on health care reform. The panel was chaired by Tracey M. Bailey, Executive Director of the Health Law Institute, with presentations from Colleen Flood, Marie-Claude Prémont, and Robert Evans. Sessions were held over two days with leading scholars from across Canada speaking on emerging topics in health law including: research challenges; liability issues; technologies; paradigms; gaps; and health issues. The book launch for the third edition of Canadian Health Law and Policy edited by Jocelyn Downie, Timothy Caulfield and Colleen Flood was held at a reception which also featured poster presentations from students.
Madame Justice Ellen Picard of the Alberta Court of Appeal commented on the conference as follows: "The conference was the best that I have been to in many years. Congratulations to the organizers. It was a joy to realize the incredible achievements of the senior participants and to see the enthusiasm and exciting research of the junior. All are united in their committment to health law. That this would occur, was my dream of thirty years ago."
Papers from the conference have been published in a special edition of the Health Law Journal.
