Professor Barbara Billingsley joined the faculty as a full-time professor in 2001, after several years of serving the faculty as a sessional / adjunct instructor and practising civil litigation in Edmonton at the law firms of Brownlee Fryett and Sharek Reay respectively. She is currently a non-practising member of both the Law Societies of Alberta and the Northwest Territories, a member of the editorial board of the Canadian Journal of Insurance Law, and a member of the governing board of the Canadian Forum for Civil Justice. In recent years, Professor Billingsley has been involved with the faculty’s competitive Moot Court program and has served on the Working Committee on Costs for the Rules Project of the Alberta Law Reform Institute.
Professor Billingsley’s research and teaching interests focus on constitutional law, insurance law and civil procedure. She has presented and published papers on various topics relating to these areas of law, including: automobile insurance reform and equality rights, the regulation of science and freedom of expression, insurance bad faith and the obligations of insurance defence counsel, and Mary Carter agreements. In 2005, Professor Billingsley received the faculty’s Tevie H. Miller Teaching Excellence Award.
