Following a three-year term as Associate Dean, Professor Lewis Klar was Dean of the Faculty of Law between 1997 and 2002. Professor Klar joined the Faculty in 1973, after teaching as a lecturer at Osgoode Hall Law School. He teaches Torts; Advanced Torts; and Insurance Law.

Professor Klar has been a visitor at numerous universities, including Auckland, Western Australia, New South Wales, Arizona State, McGill, and the University of British Columbia. His major academic interest is in tort law. He is the author of Tort Law, which is in its fourth edition, and the co-author of a national casebook, Canadian Tort Law: Cases, Notes & Materials, now in its thirteenth edition. Professor Klar is an elected member of the American Law Institute.

Professor Klar was designated as a Queen's Counsel in 2002, received the Law Society of Alberta and Canadian Bar Association's Distinguished Service Award in Legal Scholarship in 2005, and the J Gordin Kaplan Award for Excellence in Research in 2007. He is a member of the Alberta Automobile Insurance Rate Board and the American Law Institute.
