Thesis Submission
FGSR Requirements
In 2009, the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research (FGSR) changed some of its rules on thesis formatting and submission. In particular, when students submit their approved thesis to the FGSR they now have two submission options: either submission of paper (hard) copies or electronic submission of the thesis. Electronically submitted theses must be submitted to D Space, the University of Alberta Libraries’ digital repository. An electronically submitted thesis has better public accessibility compared to a hard copy and it is quicker and cheaper for the student. While electronic submission is not mandatory, it is strongly encouraged by the FGSR.
An electronically submitted thesis submitted to D Space can be accessed on the Internet. Students who are contemplating publishing their thesis in law review article or book form need to plan ahead to ensure that proposed publishers will accept their work if it is available on-line. The FGSR will authorize a one-year restriction on public access to a thesis on D Space if the student applies to FGSR demonstrating that proposed publisher(s) do not accept work that is being published on-line. The application must be made prior to submission of the Thesis Approval/Program Completion Form to FGSR.

Faculty of Law Requirements
As a result of the new FGSR rules on submission of an approved thesis, the Faculty of Law Graduate Studies Committee has adopted new rules for submission of a law student’s approved thesis to the Faculty. Each law graduate student:
- is required to submit one paper copy of his/her approved thesis to the Weir Law Library (give copy to Kim Wilson who will send it to the Library);
- is required to submit an electronic copy of his/her approved thesis to D Space using the FGSR formatting rules for electronic copies; and
- may, but is not required to, submit a paper copy of the approved thesis to his/her supervisor.
