Visiting Speaker John Hunter

As a part of the Visiting Speaker Lecture Series, John J.L. Hunter Q.C., will be presenting a talk titled Preparing for Practice – Legal Education and the Practice of Law on Tuesday, January 26, 2010 in Room 231/237 in the Law Centre.
Mr. Hunter is a senior litigation counsel at Hunter Litigation Chambers in Vancouver. For more than thirty years he has carried on a practice in commercial litigation and arbitration, as well as administrative and public law. A graduate of Yale, the London School of Economics and the University of Toronto Law School, he was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1994, was elected a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers in 2001 and served as President of the Law Society of British Columbia in 2008.
In 2007, he was asked by the Federation of Law Societies of Canada to chair the Federation’s Task Force on the Common Law Degree, which conducted a two-year review of the educational requirements for entry into the bar admissions programs in Canada. The Task Force reported out in 2009 with a serious of recommendations for the development of a national standard for entry into the professional licensing process.
Mr. Hunter will discuss the considerations and conclusions of the Task Force as they relate to preparation for the practice of law in Canada.
