The Combined MBA/JD Program

Enter the exciting world of business and the established profession of law. The MBA/JD joint program was developed by two of the University of Alberta's most prestigious faculties. The program is offered within a four-year period--one year less than taking each degree separately.

Admission Information

Admission to the combined program is a three-part process. The Application procedure involves:

  • Application and admission to the MBA Program
  • Application and admission to the Faculty of Law
  • Application and admission to the combined MBA/JD program

Beside new entrants, students in the first year of the regular MBA program or first and second year students enrolled in the Faculty of Law are eligible to apply for the joint program.

1.MBA Program Application Process

Applicants who hold, or are about to receive, their baccalaureate degrees from an accredited institution are eligible to apply to the Faculty of Graduate Studies for admission to the MBA program. All disciples are accepted. There is no requirement for a business undergraduate degree.Due to the integrated nature of the program, full-time entering students begin studies in September.

The deadline for applications is April 30 (April 1, for applicants from China).

2. JD Admission Process

Admission to the Faculty of Law is limited to 175 each year. It should be noted that the number of candidates who meet the minimum requirements for admission far exceeds this number. It should be understood that eligibility does not guarantee admission. Admission in the regular category is based primarily on a candidate's pre-law academic record and LSAT score.

The deadline for applications is November 1 of the year prior to admission.

Candidates should submit a University of Alberta Application Form and the required application of $100 for new applicants and $75 for re-admissions, on or before November 1st of the year prior to admission. The documentation deadline is February 1st. Forms are available at the Office of the Registrar, the Faculty of Law, or on-line at: http://www.registrar.ualberta.ca/admissions/preamble.html

3.MBA/JD Joint Program Application Process

Each applicant must apply for and be admitted to the joint program by completing an MBA/JD application form. Forms are available at the School of Business, the Faculty of Law, and on-line at http://www.bus.ualberta.ca/mba/applications.

A copy of the joint application form should be submitted to both the School of Business and the Faculty of Law.

A Selection Committee composed of representatives of the Faculty of Law and the School of Business will determine admission into the combined program. Particular attention in the selection will be given to:

  • Past academic achievement
  • Test scores on the GMAT and LSAT examinations
  • Maturity, interest, and a rationale of how such a combined program will enhance a student's professional skills and career prospects
