Imagine spending springtime in Spain while earning credit towards your LL.B. degree!
In 2008 the University of Granada Faculty of Law the University of Alberta Faculty of Law established a spring session three-credit course: Law 599: Comparative and European Union Law in Spain. Taught in English by University of Alberta Law Professors, the course is held each spring in Granada, Spain and is open to all current Canadian law students.
In 2011 the course is scheduled May 9 – 26.
The main objectives of this three week intensive course are to:
1. assist in developing an understanding of the core aspects and principles of comparative law and European Union (EU) law;
(2) provide a deeper understanding of civil law systems, with particular application to the Spanish and Latin American civil law systems and their differences from common law systems;
(3) develop a greater appreciation of the historical, political and cultural influences on a legal system, with particular application to Spain; and
(4) explore the practical aspects of the Spanish civil law system and law practice through field trips to e.g. courts, the penitentiary.

Canadian non-UofA law students must first obtain visiting student status through the Registrar’s Office. Students must then complete the Application Form and Waiver and mail to:

Students will be notified of their participation in the course by February 1st each year. A mandatory course orientation will be scheduled for March which will cover finer details including an orientation and welcome reception upon arrival in Granada, travel and personal safety information, and course material.
